Deduplication, encryption, and compression before transfer to the cloud

CloudBoost performs inline deduplication, compression and AES‑256 encryption on the client side (or in‑appliance) so that only minimal, secure data is sent to the cloud object store.

You can deploy CloudBoost as a virtual appliance directly in public clouds (AWS, Azure, VMware), so no dedicated on‑prem hardware is needed to replicate backups into cloud services.

When you run the NetWorker Installation Manager on an NVE appliance, after the software package is initialized the Installation Setup page appears – this is where you check (or uncheck) the Storage Node only option to configure NVE as a dedicated storage node.

Client Direct enables NetWorker clients to send deduplicated, compressed, and encrypted backup data directly to the cloud target (via CloudBoost or DDVE) without routing through a storage node. This optimizes performance and reduces bandwidth and storage requirements, making it ideal for cloud backups.

In a NetWorker environment integrated with LDAP/AD, users must authenticate against the NetWorker Authentication Service to execute commands with appropriate privileges. Thensrlogincommand isused to authenticate the user with the Authentication Server, establishing the required session context. This resolves privilege-related failures when running NetWorker commands.

Thensrlcpddaemon is responsible for controlling library resources, including management access ports (MAPs) and other robotic control features used in tape libraries. It facilitates communication between NetWorker and physical media libraries.

The commandnslookup queries the specified DNS server to resolve the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the NetWorker Virtual Edition (NVE) into its corresponding IP address. This is a forward DNS lookup, used to verify that the DNS server correctly resolves the NVE's hostname.

To enable an external NMC server to manage other NetWorker servers, thensrauthtrustcommand must be executed on each additional NetWorker server that the NMC needs to manage. This establishes trust between the NetWorker server and the external NMC, allowing for secure communication and management capabilities.

The mminfo utility is one of the CLI administration tools that ship only with the NetWorker Extended Client; the base Windows client install doesn’t include it. Installing the Extended Client package on the Windows host immediately provides the mminfo executable.

For NetWorker deployments in public clouds that need to write backups to object-storage targets (AWS S3, Azure Blob, etc.), you must deploy the CloudBoost virtual appliance. CloudBoost is the data-protection-optimized enabler that handles client‑side deduplication, compression, and encryption and then writes the deduplicated data into the cloud object store, while only metadata is retained locally on the appliance.

When a user logs in to the NetWorker User interface, the NetWorker Authentication Service (AuthC) generates a SAML2 Token to securely authenticate and authorize the session. This token format supports federated identity and secure token-based access across the NetWorker environment.
